Ultimate Maltipoo Guide: Traits, Care, Training & Health Tips

Maltese sweetness and Poodle smarts in a tiny, cuddly, low-shedding companion. Here is everything you need to know about raising, grooming, and caring for a Maltipoo.

Maltipoo dog, a Maltese and Poodle mix

Quick take: The Maltipoo is a cross between a Maltese and a Toy or Miniature Poodle. Expect a small dog of 8–14 inches and 4–20 pounds, with toy-sized Maltipoos under 10 pounds and miniatures up to about 20. The coat is soft, wavy to curly, and low-shedding but needs regular grooming. Maltipoos are affectionate, playful, gentle, and smart. They suit apartments, seniors, and families with gentle children, and they do best with owners who are home much of the day.

1. Introduction to the Breed

The Maltipoo is one of the most popular small designer dogs in America, and it is easy to see why. The Maltese brings a gentle, affectionate personality and a silky white coat. The Poodle brings intelligence, trainability, and a coat that sheds very little. Together they create a sweet, cuddly companion that loves people and fits comfortably into almost any home.

Maltipoos are true companion dogs. They want to be with their people as much as possible, whether that means following you from room to room, riding along on errands, or napping in your lap. They are playful and lively in short bursts, then happy to settle down. Many have a charming, clownish side and love to show off tricks.

As with any mix, individual Maltipoos vary. Maltese-leaning dogs tend to have silkier, straighter coats and a calmer, more lap-dog temperament. Poodle-leaning dogs tend to have curlier coats, a bit more energy, and a stronger drive to learn. Reading about both parents helps you plan. See our Maltese guide and Poodle guide.

2. History of the Breed

The Maltese is one of the oldest toy breeds in the world, with roots on the Mediterranean island of Malta more than 2,000 years ago. Prized by nobility and royalty, the Maltese was kept purely as a companion for centuries, which explains its deep devotion to people. The American Kennel Club recognized the Maltese in 1888.

The Poodle began as a water retriever in Germany and France. Its intelligence and versatility made it one of the world’s most popular breeds. Toy and Miniature Poodles, the sizes used in Maltipoo breeding, were developed as companion-sized versions of the same clever dog.

The Maltipoo was developed in the United States during the designer-dog boom of the 1990s, as breeders sought a small, affectionate, low-shedding companion. It quickly became one of the most popular Poodle mixes in the country. The Maltipoo is not recognized by the AKC, though some hybrid and designer-dog registries list it, and breed clubs promote health testing. Many Maltipoos today come from multigenerational lines.

3. Physical Characteristics

Typical Size and Weight

Most Maltipoos stand 8–14 inches at the shoulder and weigh 4–20 pounds. Toy Poodle crosses usually stay under 10 pounds, while Miniature Poodle crosses can reach 15–20 pounds. Most reach adult size by 9–12 months. Be cautious of anyone selling “teacup” Maltipoos bred to be extremely tiny, since very small dogs often have more health problems.

Coat and Color

The Maltipoo coat is soft and can be silky and straight, wavy, or curly. It sheds very little, which makes the mix popular with people who want less hair around the house. Because loose hair stays in the coat, tangles and mats form quickly without regular brushing. No dog is completely allergen-free, so anyone with allergies should spend time with the specific dog first. White and cream are the most common colors, but Maltipoos can also be apricot, red, silver, black, or parti-color.

Distinctive Features

Expect a small, rounded head, large dark eyes, a black nose, and floppy ears covered in soft fur. The overall look is sweet and teddy-bear-like, especially in a rounded puppy cut. Light-coated Maltipoos often show tear staining under the eyes.

4. Personality Traits

Maltipoos are affectionate, gentle, and playful. They love their families and often bond especially closely with one person. Most are friendly with visitors and get along well with other calm dogs and cats. Many have a joyful, bouncy energy and love games, toys, and attention.

The Maltese side brings sweetness, devotion, and a love of being held and pampered. The Poodle side brings intelligence, curiosity, and a desire to learn. Together, they make a dog that is easy to love and usually easy to train. Maltipoos can also be sensitive and may become anxious with loud noises, rough handling, or long periods alone.

Maltipoos are good with older children who understand how to handle a small dog gently. With toddlers, supervision is essential, since tiny dogs can be dropped or stepped on. Most Maltipoos live happily with other pets, especially when raised with them, but play with larger dogs should always be supervised.

“A Maltipoo’s favorite place in the world is wherever you happen to be.”

Maltipoos can be alert barkers and may announce every visitor. They are also prone to separation anxiety if left alone for long stretches. If you love small, gentle companions, you may also enjoy our guides to the Bichpoo and the Yorkipoo.

5. Care Requirements

Exercise Needs

Plan on 20–40 minutes of activity a day. Two short walks plus indoor play are usually enough. Maltipoos enjoy chasing small toys, short games of fetch, and exploring new places on leash. Many also enjoy trick training and beginner agility, which give them exercise for body and brain.

Always use a harness instead of a collar, since toy breeds are prone to tracheal problems. Keep walks shorter in extreme heat or cold, and consider a sweater in winter if your Maltipoo has a short trim.

Mental Stimulation

Maltipoos are smart and enjoy learning. Short training sessions, small food puzzles, snuffle mats, and hide-and-seek with treats keep their minds busy. Mental exercise also helps cut down on boredom barking and anxious behaviors.

Grooming

Grooming is the biggest commitment with a Maltipoo. Brush several times a week, ideally daily, working in small sections from the skin outward. Follow with a fine-toothed comb to catch small tangles before they become mats. Pay extra attention behind the ears, under the legs, along the collar line, and around the tail.

Plan on professional grooming every four to six weeks. Many owners choose a short “puppy cut” that is easier to maintain. Wipe around the eyes daily with a soft, damp cloth to reduce tear staining, and keep the hair around the eyes trimmed. Check and clean ears weekly, trim nails every two to three weeks, and brush teeth daily if you can. Small breeds are prone to dental disease.

Diet & Sleeping Habits

Feed a high-quality toy- or small-breed food portioned for your Maltipoo’s size. Tiny dogs have fast metabolisms and small stomachs, so puppies may need three or four small meals a day, and adults two or three. Because toy puppies are prone to low blood sugar, do not skip meals, and talk to your vet about signs to watch for. Keep treats tiny and count them in the daily total.

Maltipoos sleep 12–14 hours a day and love a warm, cozy bed close to their people. A round, bolstered bed lets them curl up and feel secure.

6. Health and Lifespan

Maltipoos often live 12–15 years or longer. Like all toy mixes, they can inherit conditions from either parent. Ask breeders about the parents’ health and watch for these:

  • Patellar luxation. A kneecap that slips out of place, common in toy breeds. Watch for skipping or holding up a back leg.
  • Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease. A hip condition in small breeds that usually shows as limping in young dogs.
  • Eye conditions. Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) can come from the Poodle side. Ask about eye exams and DNA testing on the parents.
  • White shaker syndrome. A condition seen in small white dogs, including Maltese, that causes full-body tremors. It is usually treatable, so see your vet if your dog starts trembling without a clear reason.
  • Collapsing trachea and hypoglycemia. Toy breeds are prone to both. Use a harness, watch for a honking cough, and do not skip meals with young puppies.
  • Dental disease. Tiny mouths crowd teeth. Daily brushing and regular dental checkups are essential.

Regular vet visits, dental care, careful handling, a healthy weight, and a breeder who health-tests are the best foundation for a long, healthy life.

7. Training and Socialization

Maltipoos are intelligent and usually eager to please, which makes them fun to train. Positive reinforcement works best: tiny treats, gentle praise, and play in short, cheerful sessions. Because they are sensitive, harsh corrections can make them fearful or withdrawn.

Start with name recognition, sit, down, stay, come, and walking on a harness. House training can take patience with toy breeds, so take your puppy outside often and reward every success. Some owners use an indoor potty area for bad weather. Crate training provides a safe den and helps with travel.

  • Socialize early. Between 8 and 16 weeks, introduce your puppy to new people, calm dogs, sounds, and places so it grows into a confident adult.
  • Build independence. Practice short absences from day one and gradually increase them. Pair departures with a food puzzle so alone time becomes something good. Some owners also ask their vet whether a daily calming chew such as LibertyPaw Canine Calm fits their dog’s routine.
  • Teach a quiet cue. Reward calm behavior at the door and window to keep barking in check.
  • Treat them like a dog. Let your Maltipoo walk, explore, and learn manners rather than carrying it everywhere.

Short play sessions with a soft toy make a great reward after training.

8. Ideal Home Environment

Maltipoos are ideal apartment and condo dogs. They need little space and can get much of their exercise indoors. What they need most is company. They do best in homes where someone is around for much of the day, such as retirees, remote workers, or families with flexible schedules.

They are a great fit for seniors, singles, couples, first-time owners, and families with older, gentle children. They are a weaker fit for homes with toddlers, households with large, rough-playing dogs, or owners who are away for long hours.

A Day With a Maltipoo

A typical day might start with a short walk and breakfast in a small puzzle feeder. Midday brings a quick play session and a nap in a sunny spot. In the evening, another short walk, a five-minute brushing session, and a training game or two round things out before cuddling on the couch. With that rhythm, most Maltipoos are relaxed, happy companions.

Maltipoos are easy travel companions. Use a secure carrier or car seat, and bring a familiar blanket. Be careful with stairs, furniture, and balconies, since a fall can seriously injure a small dog.

9. Best Toys & Gear for a Maltipoo

Choose soft, lightweight toys sized for a small mouth. Avoid heavy or very hard toys, which can damage small teeth. Supervise play and replace toys that start to come apart.

The Cuddle Plush

A soft toy to carry, toss, and nap beside. Many Maltipoos pick a favorite.

10. Adoption and Breeder Tips

A responsible Maltipoo breeder health-tests both parents for knees, eyes, and other inherited conditions and shares the results. They let you meet the mother, raise puppies in the home, begin socialization and gentle grooming early, and will take a dog back at any age. They should also tell you honestly whether the Poodle parent is a Toy or Miniature, so you know what size to expect.

Avoid breeders who advertise “teacup” or “micro” Maltipoos, promise a “100% hypoallergenic” dog, always have puppies available, or offer to ship puppies without meeting you. Maltipoos are one of the most common puppy-mill mixes, so visit in person whenever you can.

Adoption is a wonderful option too. Maltipoos and other Maltese and Poodle mixes regularly appear in shelters and small-breed rescues. Adult dogs come with known sizes, coats, and personalities.

Quick Questions

Do Maltipoos shed? Very little. But because loose hair stays in the coat, regular brushing and grooming are a must to prevent mats.

Are Maltipoos good for first-time owners? Yes, as long as the owner is ready for regular grooming and can provide plenty of company.

How do I reduce tear stains? Wipe the eyes daily, keep the hair around the eyes trimmed, and ask your vet about any persistent tearing.

Before your Maltipoo comes home, set up a small crate, a cozy bed, a harness and lightweight leash, a small brush and fine comb, and a few soft toys. Puppy-proof low spaces and block off stairs. Then get ready for a sweet little companion who will love you with its whole heart.
