How to Pick the Right Harness for Your Dog
A harness should fit snugly without rubbing, redirect force to the chest (not the neck), and hold up to your dog's daily energy. Here's the framework we walk customers through on the phone:
1. Measure your dog's chest girth FIRST
Wrap a soft tape measure around the widest part of your dog's chest, just behind the front legs. Compare to our size ranges: small fits 13–18″ chest, medium 17–22″, large 22–30″, X-large 26–40″. If your dog is between sizes, size up — you can't make a small harness fit a big chest.
2. Match the harness style to your dog's walking habits
For everyday walks, a harness spreads leash pressure across the chest instead of the neck. Our harnesses have no reflective trim, so add a light or reflective leash for walks at dawn, dusk, or after dark. For small dogs and puppies, the step-in design avoids the stress of pulling a harness over their head.
3. Adjust for snug, not tight
A properly-fitted harness lets you slide two fingers comfortably between the harness and your dog's body all around the harness. Tighter than that and it'll rub or restrict movement. Looser and your dog can slip out (especially clever escape artists). Re-check it after washing and as your dog's weight or coat changes.
4. Inspect hardware regularly
Buckles, clips, and webbing all wear over time — especially on active dogs. Check every few months that the buckle still clicks securely, the clip isn't bent, and the webbing isn't frayed. Retire any harness with compromised hardware.

Will my dog be able to slip out of this harness?
