Handcrafted Dog Harnesses Made in USA

We're David and Joe, the co-founders of LibertyPaw and longtime pet parents. We curated this harness collection from Trish Hampton, a small American workshop hand-stitching designer harnesses with padded chest panels, solid metal hardware, and four-point adjustability across small, medium, large, and X-large. Every harness below is a handcrafted dog harness made in USA — built to redirect force to the chest (away from your dog's neck), survive everyday walks, and last for years.

From breathable mesh step-in vests to 360° reflective night-safety harnesses and shock-absorbing padded chest panels for active dogs, our collection covers every walking style and household. And 2% of each sale is donated to Veteran Service Organizations, like K9s For Warriors, that train rescue dogs as service dogs for veterans with PTSD.

Why "Made in USA" Matters for the Harness That Holds Your Dog Steady

A harness is the difference between a comfortable walk and a stressful one — for your dog and for you. Cheap imports fit awkwardly, dig into the chest, and break at the buckle when a dog lunges. Our handcrafted dog harnesses are different — every harness on this page is hand-stitched by Trish Hampton, a small American workshop using premium nylon webbing, padded chest panels, reinforced D-rings, and adjustable fits across small, medium, large, and X-large sizes.

Most bargain dog harnesses at the big-box stores are mass-produced overseas with thin nylon, plastic snap clips that crack in cold weather, and pre-set sizing that fits no dog quite right. Our American-made harnesses are different. Every harness in this collection is:

  • Hand-stitched in the USA by Trish Hampton — not relabeled imports
  • Designed to redirect force to the chest — away from your dog's throat and trachea, so walks are easier on dogs who pull
  • Padded across the chest panel — soft against the skin, comfortable for hour-long walks
  • Adjustable across four points — chest, neck, and two side straps for a true custom fit
  • Built with solid metal hardware — D-rings, buckles, and triglides that won't snap when your dog lunges

Not sure which size or style fits your dog? Email shop@libertypaw.com or call 877-729-5789. We'll walk you through measuring your dog's chest girth and matching the harness style to their build.

Three Harness Styles We're Known For

Every harness in this collection falls into one of three distinct style families — pick the family that matches how your dog walks and what kind of pulling (or escaping) you're trying to manage:

🧹

Breathable Step-In Mesh

Lightweight mesh vest that your dog steps into, then secures with velcro and a buckle. Cool for summer, quick-dry, and easy for small breeds and puppies who don't like over-the-head harnesses.

💡

Reflective Night-Safety

3M reflective trim around 360° of the harness for high visibility on early-morning and after-dark walks. The category for dogs walked at night, in low-light areas, or near roads.

🪧

Shock-Absorbing Padded Chest

Heavy-duty harness with a padded shock-absorbing chest panel for dogs who pull or lunge unexpectedly. Redirects force away from the neck and softens sudden impacts on both you and the dog.

How to Pick the Right Harness for Your Dog

A harness should fit snugly without rubbing, redirect force to the chest (not the neck), and hold up to your dog's daily energy. Here's the framework we walk customers through on the phone:

1. Measure your dog's chest girth FIRST

Wrap a soft tape measure around the widest part of your dog's chest, just behind the front legs. Compare to our size ranges: small fits 13–18″ chest, medium 17–22″, large 22–30″, X-large 26–40″. If your dog is between sizes, size up — the four-point adjustment lets you tighten down, but you can't make a small harness fit a big chest.

2. Match the harness style to your dog's walking habits

For dogs who walk calmly on leash, our standard padded designs work great. For dogs who pull hard, the shock-absorbing padded chest style redirects force to the chest and softens impacts on both ends of the leash. For dogs walked at dawn, dusk, or after dark, our reflective trim options dramatically improve visibility. For small dogs and puppies, the step-in mesh avoids the stress of pulling a harness over their head.

3. Adjust for snug, not tight

A properly-fitted harness lets you slide two fingers comfortably between the harness and your dog's body at every adjustment point (chest, neck, side straps). Tighter than that and it'll rub or restrict movement. Looser and your dog can slip out (especially clever escape artists). The four-point adjustability lets you dial this in once and forget about it.

4. Inspect hardware regularly

Buckles, D-rings, and velcro all wear over time — especially on active dogs. Check after every few months that the buckle still clicks securely, the D-ring isn't bent, and the velcro still grips firmly. Retire any harness with compromised hardware. Our American-made hardware lasts years; cheap imports can fail in months.

How Our Harnesses Compare to Bargain Imports

The differences are real, and they matter for the safety of your dog and the comfort of your daily walks.

Materials & Engineering We Trust

Every harness maker we work with picks materials we'd put on our own dogs. A few of the workhorses in this collection:

Premium nylon webbing: The structural backbone of every harness — high-tensile USA-milled nylon that holds tension without stretching. Same fabric family used in seatbelts.

Padded chest panel: A layer of dense foam or padded fabric between the harness webbing and your dog's skin. That's what keeps the harness comfortable on hour-long walks and prevents chafing on dogs with sensitive skin or thin coats.

Solid metal D-rings and buckles: Cast metal hardware that resists cracking, bending, or failing when your dog lunges at a squirrel. The number-one place cheap harnesses fail.

Designer cotton overlays (premium styles): The patterned harnesses use the same designer cotton fabric line as our bow ties, blossoms, and patterned collars — build a matched set if you want to.

What we won't put on our harnesses: plastic clips, thin webbing, raw unpadded chest straps, screen-printed designs that peel, or any material we couldn't trace to a U.S. supplier.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I measure my dog for a harness?

Wrap a soft tape measure around the widest part of your dog's chest, just behind the front legs. Compare to our size ranges: small 13–18″, medium 17–22″, large 22–30″, X-large 26–40″. If between sizes, size up — the four-point adjustment handles the rest.

Is a harness better than a collar for dogs who pull?

Yes — in most cases. A harness redirects the pulling force to your dog's chest (a strong, flat surface) rather than concentrating it on the neck and windpipe. This is especially important for small dogs, brachycephalic breeds (pugs, bulldogs), and any dog with a history of collapsed-trachea concerns. For everyday walking, pair a harness with a comfortable collar for ID-tag carrying.

Will my dog be able to slip out of this harness?

Not if it's adjusted properly. The four-point adjustability (chest, neck, two side straps) is designed to fit each dog's specific shape. Use the two-finger test: slide two fingers between the harness and your dog's body at each point — that's the right snugness. If your dog has slipped out of harnesses before, the shock-absorbing padded-chest style with reinforced straps is the most escape-resistant option.

How tight should the harness be?

Snug but not constricting. Two fingers' room at every adjustment point is the right benchmark. Too tight rubs and restricts movement; too loose lets your dog slip out (or shift the harness during walks).

Are these harnesses machine-washable?

The mesh and webbing harnesses are — gentle cycle in cold water, mesh laundry bag, air dry. The designer cotton patterned harnesses are best spot-cleaned with a damp cloth and mild soap to protect the print and padding. Each product page lists the specific care guidance.

Do you offer a guarantee?

Yes — we offer a 30-day happiness guarantee on every order. If a harness fails under reasonable use in the first 30 days, email shop@libertypaw.com and we'll make it right. We don't cover damage from chewing or extreme wear — that's just honest reality, not fine print.

Complete the Walk with the Right Leash

Fit & Safety Note

Check the fit regularly and inspect hardware. Dogs gain or lose weight, puppies grow fast, and even adult dogs' chest girth can change with the seasons. Re-check the two-finger fit every few months. Inspect the D-rings, buckles, and velcro for wear or damage, and retire any harness with compromised hardware. Never use a damaged harness with a dog who pulls or lunges.

The information on this page is for general guidance only and is not a substitute for professional veterinary or training advice. If your dog has neck, chest, respiratory, or behavioral concerns, consult your veterinarian or a certified trainer about the right walking gear for your situation.

Disclaimer: Always adjust all straps for a secure, snug fit to prevent your dog from slipping out or experiencing chafing. This harness is designed for walking and training purposes; do not leave it on your pet unattended or for extended periods of time. Regularly inspect the fabric, stitching, and buckles for wear and tear, and replace the harness immediately if any damage is found.
